Into Wonderland
CHIYA CLIKA
‘In a blue ocean, you cross the expanse of cobalt blue and white to an island of multicolour. Hues of all kinds greet you. Your eyes break from the everyday grey. A rabbit bounces past, checking its iPhone as it mutters about being late. It disappears down into the rabbit hole. Will you follow? Words type on your screen. “Wake up, follow the white rabbit. Into Wonderland.”’
This comes from sculpting cultural landscapes out of the growing nature of contemporary spaces. In a time when the virtual and the tangible continuously intersect, this show ‘Into Wonderland’ is to bring this into the real world to be experienced. Where the new can take form in the physical space and where it can be the central part of bringing communities together to inhabit a space together.
Rooted in the vibrant energy of East London, this exhibition brings together a dialogue between community and modernity. The works on view explore how tradition, everyday life, and shared spaces intersect with contemporary forms and ideas. By grounding modern practice in the textures of local experience, the show invites audiences to see modernity not as something distant or imposed, but as something shaped and reimagined by community.
Once an industrial hub and later a home for diverse communities from across the globe, London today embodies a dynamic blend of tradition and change. The works on view draw from this local spirit, exploring how shared histories and everyday life in London can inform new approaches to contemporary art. By weaving together past and present, the exhibition positions modernity not as a rupture, but as a continuation of the evolving story.

Born in 1998 in London, with familial roots from Hong Kong and Asia, Chiya Clika studied Fashion Communication at Central Saint Martin’s before moving on to study at UCL’s The Bartlett for an Architecture BsC.
His debut exhibition titled ‘CLICKER’ garnering interest with its notable elegance, centred around the identity of 14th-century porcelain, navigating the intersection of iconography, constructed identity, and its place in the modern day.
His paintings inhabit both digital and physical realms, with a clear line of hyper-minimalist stylisms: drawing from contemporary aesthetics while engaging with broader cultural undercurrents. The work invites reflection on how history is preserved, adapted and reimagined in the digital age, where images shift, evolve and change in a second. Alongside his visual practice, he maintains an acclaimed film portfolio, extending his exploration of narrative and form across multiple disciplines.
